Cuala and the wider GAA community was saddened to hear of the recent death of John McKnight, father of Catherine, father-in-law of Fionán Breathnach and much loved grandad of our juvenile players Caoimhe, Orla, Éabha and Eoin Breathnach.
John was a giant of Armagh football, winning a Minor All-Ireland in 1949 and was an ever-present member of their Senior full-back line throughout the 1950s, including in the 1953 All-Ireland Final defeat to Kerry. As well as the Ulster title John won that year, during his playing career he also won 2 Sigersons with UCD and 1 Railway Cup with Ulster. In 1984 he was named at left corner back in the GAA’s Team of the Century composed of non-All-Ireland winners. John was also solicitor to the GAA for many decades, guiding it through many legal issues, including the redevelopment of Croke Park.
