Cuala Minors & U16

Cuala Minors Take A Hike

On Sun 22 Nov, 32 players, mentors and parents from the minor panel headed off for a hike. All (well not quite all) came prepared with suitable hiking and rain gear and departed for the hills of Wicklow at 9am. The hike started at the Sallygap with a trip around Lough Dan followed by a challenging climb to the hilltop (some hill). Everyone managed to complete the trek with some finding the exertion a little more difficult than others. Pride of place goes to the elder statesman, Johnny Sheanon who, giving up a few years, just a few, to the other mentors, showed them how it's done. All those years of childhood climbing the hills of Cavan at last served a purpose. Shay Hayes was unable to attend (no valid excuse offered) but played his part by having civil defence and rescue helicopters on standby. This trip would not have been possible without the expert leadership of Kevin and Ciara Spain. To them, many thanks.

MFL - Div 4 (Wed 1 Jul) Cicero, standing on the Hyde Road sideline at the end of the match on Wednesday was heard to say "Perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim". "Versus, Cicero, meus vetus amicus. Versus!" replied coach Johnny Sheanon. Five points ahead with ten minutes remaining and it looked as if Cuala were going to win out over the league leaders. It was not to be. Despite a magnificent performance Cuala lost by a six point margin that did not fairly reflect the balance of play over the whole match. Keeper Cillian Sullivan gave a confident display and distributed the ball well from the kick-out. Corner backs Jack Curtin and Eoin Collopy defended heroically and both managed attacking runs in the second half. Kevin McHugh playing his first full match at full-back stood up to the pressure and got the better of his marker for most of the game. Half-backs Tadgh Blake, Daniel O'Keeffe (who broke forward for a magnificent first half goal) and Shane Errity (switched from mid-field in the first half) combined strong defensive play with effective passing. The two mid-fielders were outstanding: Oisín Breathnach fielded, passed the ball to his forwards and tracked back tirelessly throughout the match; and Donal Ennis (switched from half back in the first half) was deservedly man-of-the-match as time after time his tackling, interceptions and movement off the ball helped turn rugged defence into attack. The half forward line were individually and collecively superb: Barry Sheanon scored a point in each half and covered every blade of grass on the pitch; Andrew Brady was in the thick of the action throughout and set up crucial scores; Paul James, with three points and two second half goals, once again showed what an exceptional player he has become. The full forward line of Fiachra Ó Brolchain, Stephen Giblin (with a goal and a point in the second half) and Seán MacAodh kept the pressure on the opposition from beginning to end. Second half subsititutes Jack McCarthy, Owen Burke, Michael Shanahan and Maurice Goodwin all contributed to a display that shows the great potential of this team.
Cuala
4-6; St Peregrine's 3-15.

MFL - Div 4 (Wed 24 June)
Two evenly matched sides played out an exciting draw on a pitch at the edge of the known world on Wednesday evening. While Cuala got off to a great start with a well taken goal from man of the match Seán Moran, a strong Ravens attack put over four unanswered points to take the lead. Brian O'Ruairc - who surprisingly and unusually stayed close to goal for the duration of the match - pulled off some great saves while the full back line of Olan Coyle, Shane Kearns and Colin Brock resisted strong pressure from the opposition. Superb mid-field play from Eoin Collopy and Luke Treacy linking well with Fiachra Ó Brolchain opened up opportunities for the forwards and points from Paul James and Andrew Brady put Cuala back in front before a late Ravens point saw the first half end even at 0-5 to 1-2. An early second half point from Ravens stirred Cuala into action with five unanswered points from Oisín Misteil (2), Seán Moran, Conor Bennett and Barry Sheanon giving Cuala a deserved four point advantage mid-way through the second half. Outstanding defensive play from Tadgh Blake, Donal Ennis and Colman McKenna in the second half should have been the platform for Cuala to stretch their lead with Stephen Giblin providing extra strength in the attack. Unfortunately bad breaks of the ball and six points and a goal without reply put Ravens into a five point leade with five minutes to go. Andrew Brady scored a brilliant point to leave Cuala trailing by four points with one minute of normal time remaining. Cometh the hour cometh the man of the match: a goal from Seán Moran followed by a pressure point from a free deep into injury time gave Cuala a more than deserved share of the spoils.

MFL - Div 4 (Fri 8 May)
. Cuala Minor Bs got their first home win of the season at Hyde Road against a tough St Sylvesters team. The result was built on a strong defence with Cianan Crowley standing like a rock against the visiting team. Kevin McHugh started strongly at corner back but was injured and replaced by Rob Hallam returning to the team for the first time this season. Rob moved to centre back with Chris Byrne coming on at corner back when Shane Kearns went off injured in the second half and gave a strong performance with surging runs forward and several attempts to score. Donal Ennis gave a man of the match defensive display at left half back with Tagdh Blake putting on another excellent performance on the right. Shane Errity scored a first half goal and together with Oisín Breathnach dominated midfield throughout. Eoin Collopy scored two great second half goals to cap an outstanding performance at centre half forward. First half points from Luke Treacy and Andrew Brady (who got three more in the second half) ensured that Cuala were on level terms at half time 1-4 to 7 points despite playing against a strong breeze. Great attacking runs by Seán MacAodh and five points from frees and open play from the brilliant Paul James helped Cuala pull clear. Briain Ó Ruairc had a great day in goal with another of his trade mark forward runs. On the line coach John Sheanon showed his tactical genius by bringing on Mike Shanahan at corner forward to score a cracking goal to finally kill off the opposition. Maurice Goodwin and Brian Barry added pace and guile up front as Cuala ended the game well in control.
Cuala B
4:10; St Sylvesters 1:09.

MFL - Div 4 (Sun 26 April)

While Cuala Minor Bs lost by a big score there were many positives to be taken away from Silver Park. In the first half Jack McCarthy, Maurice Goodwin, Ben Nugent, Fiachra Ó Brolcháin and Seán MacAodh and second half subs Mike Shanahan, Karl Barry, Owen Bourke and Brian Barry were involved in some excellent attacking play but Cuala were unlucky not to put more on the scoreboard than great points from Declan O'Rourke and Andrew Brady. Nevertheless Barry Sheanon never faltered in his efforts to punch a hole in the rugged Crokes' defence. Both halves saw excellent defensive play from Cianan Crowley, Donal Ennis, Cillian Whelan, Oisín Breathnach and Tagdh Blake with a man of the match performance from Greg Egan. Briain Ó Ruairc was outstanding in goal and had time for a surging attacking run in the first half. The match was enhanced by a display of brilliant refereeing that repeatedly brought gasps of astonishment and admiration from the sidelines.
Kilmacud Crokes 02:14, Cuala 0:02.

MFL - Div4 (Sun 5 April)
Cuala Minor Bs got their first win of the season at 12th Lock against a skilful Lucan team. Cianan Crowley, Kevin McHugh, Colin Brock, Fiachra Ó Brolchain and Donal Ennis in the 2nd half together gave a magnificent defensive display while Shane Errity and Oisín Breathnach dominated midfield with Eoin Collopy working tirelessly at centre half forward. Three points from Oisín Misteil, a great point from Shane Moran and a point each from half backs Andrew Brady and Tadhg Blake gave Cuala a five point lead at half time. Cuala upped the pace against the breeze in the 2nd half when a great Shane Moran goal, two points from Eoin Brennan and a few well worked poinst from Maurice Goodwin kept Cuala ahead. Cillian Sullivan added pace up front with Barry Sheanon giving a man of the match performance with a goal and two points. A magnificent save from Briain Ó Ruairc late on kept our goal intact and ensured Cuala ran off deserved winners.
Lucan Sarsfields 0:5, Cuala 2-11.

MFL - Div 4 ( Sun 22 Mar).
Another encouraging display by the Minor Bs was offset by a second missed penalty in successive matches and giving away goals at crucial moments. A strong first half performance saw a brilliant goal from Owen Collopy, an excellent point from Barry Sheanon and a great run and shot over the bar by wing back Tadhg Blake. Against a strong breeze in the second half Cianan Crowley was outstanding at full back with a man of the match display by Kevin McHugh. Oisin Breathnach and Andrew Brady combined strong defending and pushing forward in support of Shane Errity and Declan O'Rourke at mid-field.
Cuala B 1-3; Raheny B 3-8.

MFL - Div 4 (Sun 8 Mar)
Cuala Minor Bs put up a brave and tenacious display against an excellent and physically tough St Vincents side in Division 4 of the Minor Football League at St Anne's Park. The final score did not fairly reflect the balance of play during which Cuala produced some great football. Outstanding work by Tadhg Blake and some great points by Seán Moran and an excellent score from Seán MacAodh kept Cuala in touch. Unfortunately St.Vincents were more accurate scorers and ran out ultimate winners despite further great scores by Seán Moran and outstanding defending in a man-of-the-match performance from Cianan Crowley which was a highlight of a second half display. This gritty display will surely have laid a solid foundation for certain success for this team in the future.

Minor B Hurling (Sun 1 Mar)
The Minor Bs got their Hurling Season off to a great start on Sunday (1st). An away draw against a stylish Clontarf was a good result in itself but the story behind it gives even more satisfaction. This was a brand new team under new management of Paul O'Sullivan & Paul Whelan and it might have been expected they'd take a few games before settling down. Despite a hearty effort in the first 30 minutes, things looked bleak at half time - 6 points adrift and about to turn into a stiff wind and face a Clontarf side that had shown themselves to be skilful, well-organised and fit. But some spiritual advice delivered at the interval by the "Two Pauls" seems to have had the desired effect because then shades of another Paul seemed to take hold - the one once seen on the road to Damascus. And what a conversion it was. The Dalkey boys took to the field and produced a stunning performance - contesting each and every sliother and running their hearts out. That "never-say-die" attitude was to be seen all over the pitch from Keeper to Full Forwards and that effort paid off when two goals inside a minute near the end of the game brought Cuala level and left a stunned Clontarf side feeling a little like their ancient Danish visitors. It just goes to show its never over 'til its over.

Minor A Hurling Championship Final 2008
Cuala 0:10 Ballyboden St Endas 0:11
Whoever said lightning never strikes the same place twice? For the second year in a row, a free awarded in time added-on, deprived the Cuala Minor Hurlers and their bewildered supporters of at least another day out in the 'A' Championship. Last year, against Na Fianna in O'Toole Park, a similar Championship-deciding free was surprisingly awarded. This year, different opponents, same venue, same tied game, and . . .well you know the rest.

More Pictures.

The 2008 final was played at a ferocious pace, with a quality and skill level that would have graced any stadium in the country but on a playing "surface" better suited to the National Ploughing Championships. Cuala, playing down the hill in the first half, started much the brighter and had 3 points on the board before 'Boden stirred. Cuala didn't make hay during this period of dominance in the opening quarter and missed a number of very scoreable chances which was worrying for the Red supporters in the huge crowd. Cuala's half-back line of Conor Gough, Colm O'Farrell and Oisin Whelan were in total control during this period and sent ball after ball back into the Cuala attack. Packie Holden, Simon Timlon and Sean Barron in the full-back line were hardly tested in the first half and goalie Paul Butler had very little work to do.

Cuala's full-forward Christie Howard made two wonderful catches in front of goal during this period but his attempted strikes on goal were snuffed out by the Blue & Whites on both occasions. Three well-taken frees from the hurl of Eoin Cronin (who was to score seven), and two magnificent long-range efforts from the mid-field pairing of man-of-the match, Rory Cole and his partner-in-crime Adam Hudson were the pick of the first half scores. As half-time bekoned, Boden began to claw their way back into the game. Showing real opportunism, their forwards, with a very limited supply of ball, tacked on four points just before the interval and the teams went in with only the minimum between them on the half-hour 05:04.

Boden's purple patch came following the re-start as Cuala for some reason came slowly out of the blocks. The Blue & Whites switched full forward Niall McMorrow to wing-forward and, showing tremendous class, he began to find his range with a number of well taken scores. His pace was causing concern and Cuala moved Conor Gough onto him and this slowed down the scoring rate, but damage was being done. Ballyboden's forwards were now getting a good supply of ball from their half-back line and the game began to turn in Boden's favour. The Blues clocked up 6 unanswered points to leave Cuala down 05:10. The cause looked desperate for the Dalkeymen but that was to be-lie the character and determination of this Cuala outfit. Cuala's management moved Mark Schutte back into the half-back line and again the tide began to move in Cuala's favour. Cuala's half-forward line of Eoin Cronin, Colm Sheanan and Brian Sexton started to battle hard and Ballyboden again began to rock back on their heels. Cuala's never-say-die attitude saw corner-forwards Dan Spillane and Conor O'Brien tackle everything that moved and forced poor clearances from the Boden rear-guard. Every single ball was now fought for with great tenacity and Cuala clocked up 4 points without reply to leave just the minimum between the teams. At this point McMorrow took off on a dazzling run down the right and passing three Cuala defenders, he threw a pass across goal to a waiting Boden forward who pulled the trigger six yards from goal. Paul Butler pulled off a tremendous, instinctive save and the crowd breathed again. Late on, Mark Schutte rose high in from of his own goal to catch a high dropping ball and cleared it away with pace-makers all over O'Toole Park going into over-drive!

The Dalkey Faithful was starting to believe again when up stepped Rory Cole with the point of the match. He fielded a great ball from the Cuala puck-out and, under tremendous pressure, took off up the right wing with half of Firhouse behind him. He got away a long-range shot that turned in the air and just dropped over the black-spot to thunderous applause of the Cuala supporters. Then the lightening struck. With nothing on the clock and everyone marking their diaries for the replay - that free. 11:10 to the men from Firhouse and heartbreak for their southern neighbours.

What a contrast with 1969 when a Cuala Minor team, inspired by the Holden brothers, won the Minor final by a single point when the game looked dead and buried. With nothing left on the clock, Mick Holden was released from goal and like 'Roy of the Rovers' raced up field took a pass from the left wing and drove the ball to the net for Cuala to win by the minimum. Now Cuala must start afresh to bridge a 40-year gap. Will our day ever come? Of course it will. Having witnessed the Skill spirit and character of our young hurlers, its only a matter of time before a Cuala nand will lift the silverware.

Boden as always were very gracious in victory and Cuala walked off the field to rapturous, sustained applause and cheers that were richly deserved. Well done to both teams and Managers for a spirited and sporting display of hurling.

Dec 16 - Minor Hurlers add League title to their Championship success.

The Cuala 2nd Minor hurling team completed an incredible double by defeating a much-fancied Castleknock team in the League decider in Hyde Park on Sunday morning. More . . .
