Tues 27 Sept. 18:45 – 21:00
O’Connor Theatre, Science Hub, UCD, Belfield
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Sports Partnership and UCD Sport are hosting a FREE seminar that will look at the area of gambling addiction and sport. This is an issue that is becoming more and more prevalent with the ease of access through online mediums especially among young men involved in sport.
While the majority of people who gamble may not have a problem with it, research is showing that problems associated with gambling addiction are increasing in Ireland – the Institute of Public Health estimates that up to 40,000 people could have a gambling disorder. Therefore, it is important to educate young people and their club coaches/volunteers about the issues involved and provide information on supports available to those who may be suffering.
The seminar will include speakers who will tell their own stories with gambling, the Rutland Centre will outline what the reality is around this addiction as well as what treatment and supports are available, and we will also hear how the GAA are working to both raise awareness of the issue and support their players to tackle it. Attendees will be able to identify what problem gambling is and have the knowledge to encourage those who may be experiencing a difficulty to seek support and assistance.
